A testament to progress
At the age of 74, years of regular (3/week, each up to 3000m) lap swimming has not been enough to prevent the usual age-related decline in muscle mass (called sarcopenia). I wanted to add resistance exercise to maintain strength and improve balance, since falls are an increasing risk as we get older. I have tried PISE, 5 different Recreation Centre Gyms, and introductory individual training at three of those. Checking out other facilities online, I came across Beyond Fitness and dropped by for a look.
It has a convenient location, usually ample free parking, and clean well-maintained equipment and facilities. Sarah-Jane is a remarkable trainer and I have had good experiences with two of the other trainers, when she was unavailable. The floor plan is well laid out and the trainers can build an individualized program, synchronized with other users, so there is no waiting for a machine to be available. The atmosphere is pleasant and friendly, with the clients appearing clearly motivated to improve their health and fitness.
I look forward to the twice weekly workouts and marvel at how Sarah-Jane keeps it interesting with variety and encourages me to steadily work on improvements, while monitoring body mechanics to avoid injury. She has an InBody body composition analyzer and a recent re-test confirmed that in 3 months it has been possible to rebuild muscle mass and reduce fat content.
Following a Whole Food, Plant-Based Diet has worked well in promoting resilient recovery after a workout. No supplements used except creatine.
