The Power of Unreasonable Expectations: Why Aiming Higher Transforms Lives

In the world of self-improvement and personal growth, we often hear phrases like "be realistic" or "set achievable goals." But what if I told you that sometimes, being unreasonable with yourself can lead to extraordinary results? At Beyond Fitness, we believe in the transformative power of setting high expectations for yourself. Let's explore why and how aiming higher can dramatically change your life.

The Ripple Effect of High Expectations

Consider the profound impact of expectations on human behaviour. Viktor Frankl, the renowned psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, conducted a fascinating experiment that beautifully illustrates this point. He worked with a group of drug addicts, asking them to envision themselves five years in the future, living their ideal lives.

The results were astounding. By simply raising their expectations of what was possible, these individuals experienced a significant increase in their chances of overcoming addiction. Frankl observed that many participants, who had previously struggled with traditional rehabilitation methods, began to make remarkable progress. They reported feeling more motivated, developed stronger coping mechanisms, and showed increased resilience in the face of challenges.

This experiment demonstrated that when people are encouraged to imagine a better future for themselves, they often find untapped reservoirs of strength and determination. The act of envisioning a positive outcome seemed to create a self-fulfilling prophecy, guiding their actions and decisions towards that imagined future.

Frankl's work reminds us that our expectations can shape our reality. By setting high expectations for ourselves, we create a powerful mental framework that can drive us towards success, even in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles.

When to Be Unreasonable

Now, you might be wondering, "When is it appropriate to set such lofty goals?" The answer lies in understanding the difference between identity-based habits and permission-based goals.

For daily habits and routines, it's often best to start small and build consistency. These are the foundational elements that shape our identity and create lasting change. For instance, if you're trying to become a runner, starting with a goal of running for 10 minutes a day is more likely to stick than immediately aiming for a marathon.

However, when it comes to goals that require permission or approval from others, or when you're looking to make a quantum leap in your life, being boldly unreasonable can set you apart. These are the moments when thinking big can open doors you never knew existed.

The Power of Going Big: Jesse Itzler's Extraordinary Journey

Let me share an inspiring example of how going big and being unreasonable can lead to extraordinary success. Jesse Itzler, an entrepreneur, author, and former rapper, has built his entire career on the foundation of audacious thinking and bold actions.

Itzler's journey in the music industry is a testament to the power of unreasonable expectations and creative thinking. As he recounts in his book "Living with a SEAL," Itzler had already been writing jingles for sports teams, which gave him a foothold in the music world. However, his big break came through an audacious and unconventional move that showcases just how far he was willing to go to achieve his dreams.

While working on jingles in a recording studio, Itzler stumbled upon an opportunity that most would have been too afraid to seize. He discovered the raw studio tapes of popular rapper Tone Lōc, who had recently recorded at the same studio. In a move that was equal parts bold and risky, Itzler decided to take the tapes. This wasn't just borrowing – it was essentially stealing, a decision that could have ended his career before it even began.

[Note: While I don't condone the act of stealing, this story serves as a powerful example of thinking outside the box and taking bold action. It's important to recognize that such actions can have serious consequences, and there are always ethical ways to pursue our goals.]

But Itzler didn't stop there. Armed with these tapes and a hefty dose of courage, he hatched a plan that would make most people's palms sweat. Itzler called up Delicious Vinyl, Tone Lōc's record label, and boldly claimed to be the rapper himself. His goal? To secure a meeting with the label's head producer.

Incredibly, the bluff worked. Itzler found himself sitting across from the producer, who quickly realized that the young man in front of him was definitely not Tone Lōc. But instead of showing him the door or calling the authorities, the producer was intrigued by Itzler's audacity and creativity.

What happened next is a testament to Itzler's quick thinking and charisma. Instead of being thrown out, he managed to turn this potentially disastrous situation into an opportunity. He convinced the producer to listen to his own music, and against all odds, the producer liked what he heard.

In a twist that seems almost too good to be true, Itzler – a white rapper in a predominantly black industry – walked out of that meeting with a record deal. He went on to release his music under the name Jesse Jaymes, achieving success with hits like "Shake It Like A White Girl."

This story exemplifies how thinking outside the box and being willing to take bold, even risky actions can open doors that would otherwise remain closed. Itzler's willingness to put himself in an uncomfortable situation, risking not just embarrassment and rejection but potentially legal consequences, ultimately launched his career in the music industry.

But Itzler's boldness didn't stop there. His venture into the private aviation industry is another remarkable example of how setting unreasonably high expectations can lead to extraordinary results.

With no experience in aviation, Itzler came up with the concept of prepaid private jet cards, similar to debit cards for flying. It was an idea that industry insiders thought was crazy and wouldn't work. But Itzler persisted, eventually securing a meeting with Marquis Jet, one of the largest private jet companies.

What happened next is a masterclass in creative thinking and audacious action. Knowing he needed to make a big impression, Itzler didn't just prepare a standard pitch. Instead, he leveraged his connections from the music industry to create an unforgettable presentation.

As Itzler recounts in his book, he convinced several high-profile celebrities and athletes – the exact type of clients Marquis Jet was after – to accompany him to the meeting. These weren't just any celebrities; they were potential big-ticket customers for a private jet service. Itzler's pitch wasn't just about his idea anymore; it was a live demonstration of the market he could bring to Marquis Jet.

In the meeting, Itzler made it clear: if Marquis Jet gave him a chance, these celebrities were ready to sign up for the service. It was an offer too good to refuse. This bold move, combining his innovative idea with a dramatic demonstration of its potential, led to a partnership that revolutionized the private aviation industry.

Itzler's approach to both the music industry and the aviation business demonstrates a crucial lesson: when you set unreasonably high expectations for yourself and are willing to take bold, creative actions to meet them, you can achieve things that others might consider impossible.

A Personal Journey of Unreasonable Expectations

While I haven't invited a Navy SEAL to live with me (yet!), I've had my own experiences with the power of unreasonable expectations. My story revolves around a decision that many would consider not just unreasonable, but downright crazy: opening a gym in April 2020, right at the moment when COVID-19 was forcing gyms across the world to shut down.

On April 1, 2020, I took over the lease for my personal training gym. At a time when businesses were closing their doors and uncertainty loomed large, I was just beginning. The timing couldn't have seemed worse to most people. For the first two years, my gym was closed more often than it was open due to pandemic restrictions.

But where others saw obstacles, I saw opportunity. I never viewed this challenge as anything other than a gift - a chance to lay a strong foundation for my dream. The forced closures weren't setbacks; they were opportunities to paint walls, choose equipment, and learn everything I could possibly learn about running a successful gym. I was determined to make hay while the sun wasn't shining, so to speak.

Yes, there were moments of doubt, as there are in any new venture. But giving up? That never even crossed my mind, not even for a second. The thought of failure was so far from my mind that it never occurred to me, not even for five minutes. Instead, I saw each day as a chance to get more organized, to refine my vision, and to prepare for the moment when I could finally open the doors.

It wasn't easy, of course. I worked long hours, balancing the demands of setting up the gym with homeschooling my two boys. But I've always believed that anytime there's a hardship, there's also an opportunity. Whether it's an injury that forces you to focus on other parts of your body, or a loss that allows you to find a new path, I've always looked at hardship as a gift.

This mindset served me well during those two years. While others in the industry were struggling to survive, I was building, learning, and growing. I was creating a space and a program that would be ready to thrive the moment restrictions lifted.

Now, looking back from the vantage point of a thriving personal training gym, it's clear that those unreasonable expectations were the very thing that carried us through. Who would have thought it was possible to not just survive, but thrive, after opening a gym at the onset of a global pandemic?

This experience reinforced my belief that when we set unreasonably high expectations for ourselves and approach challenges as opportunities, we often discover that we're capable of far more than we ever imagined. The journey itself, regardless of the outcome, transforms us in ways we can't foresee. Today, I'm living my very best life, doing what I love, and making a positive impact on people's health and wellbeing. All because I dared to be unreasonable and saw opportunity where others saw only obstacles.

Embracing the Journey

It's crucial to remember that even if you don't reach your "unreasonable" goal, you'll likely end up much further along than if you had set a more modest target. The key is to celebrate progress, not just end results. Every step forward, every small victory, is a testament to your growth and resilience.

When we treat ourselves as if we were already what we potentially could be, we make ourselves what we should be. This idea, echoed by thinkers from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe to Viktor Frankl, reminds us of the transformative power of high expectations.

Your Invitation to Be Unreasonable

So, I challenge you: What's your "unreasonable" goal? Whether it's in fitness, career, relationships, or personal growth, I encourage you to aim higher than you think is possible. Remember, it's not about where you start – it's about where you're heading.

At Beyond Fitness, we believe in you and your potential to achieve greatness. We're not just a gym; we're a community of individuals committed to pushing boundaries and redefining what's possible.

Share your unreasonable goals with us. Let's support each other in our journeys of transformation. Because when we dare to be unreasonable, we open ourselves up to extraordinary possibilities.

Remember, to fail is not a failure if you've aimed high enough. The very act of reaching beyond your perceived limits is a success in itself. So go ahead, be unreasonable. Your future self will thank you for it.

In the words of Jesse Itzler, "When you're not worried about failing, it's amazing how much you can actually accomplish." So let's set those unreasonable expectations, take bold actions, and see just how far we can go. After all, the only limits that truly exist are the ones we place on ourselves.
