Functional Fitness: Training for Real Life, at Any Age
Some days, being the mother of two young children makes me feel like a mule — constantly carrying their bags, my own belongings, and rushing everywhere. Other days, I’m a gymnast or wrestler, bending and twisting to meet my youngest son’s request to “pretend” with me.
I’m in my early 50s, and while I consider myself fairly fit, I’ve started noticing changes. Movements like getting up off the floor aren’t as effortless as they once were. Back and hip issues seem to appear out of nowhere. That’s when I realized I needed to focus not just on being fit, but on moving well.
That’s where functional fitness comes in.
What Is Functional Fitness?
Functional fitness is training your body for the movements you perform in everyday life — bending, lifting, twisting, pushing, and carrying — so you can do them without pain or injury.
Unlike exercises that work one muscle in isolation (like a bicep curl), functional fitness focuses on integration, teaching your muscles to work together.
For example:
A plank strengthens your abs, arms, glutes, and legs all at once.
A deadlift trains your core, legs, and back to lift heavy objects safely.
We rarely use just one muscle at a time in real life. Functional training mirrors how your body actually moves, improving your ability to handle daily tasks with ease.
